Today was day two of the Bloom Retreat at Little Lyndoch Flower Farm, and I can honestly say my mind has been blown in the best possible way.

Coming into this retreat, I’ll admit I felt a little out of my depth. I’m not a florist, and I’m only just beginning the journey of building Fairview Flowers as a small flower farm. But that’s exactly why I came to learn, ask questions, and see whether this dream might actually be possible.

Today gave me a glimpse that maybe it is.

The morning started out in the gardens learning the fundamentals of growing flowers. We talked about soil health, seasonal planting, harvesting techniques, and the simple but important practices that help flowers grow strong and beautiful.

Seeing the process up close was incredibly inspiring. It reminded me that every bouquet starts long before the flowers are arranged it begins with seeds, soil, patience, and a lot of care. As someone just starting out, this part of the day was probably the most valuable. There’s something reassuring about learning the basics from people who have been doing this for years. It makes the dream of growing flowers feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more achievable.

Then the afternoon took a creative turn.

We were guided through building a floral centerpiece, which was my first time ever attempting something like that. I quickly realised there is a lot more to arranging flowers than simply putting them in a vase. Shape, balance, texture, colour, there’s a real art to it.

But the moment that completely amazed me came later when we worked together to create a large-scale floral installation.

Watching a simple structure transform into something spectacular with layers of greenery and flowers was incredible. Piece by piece, it grew into this beautiful suspended installation that honestly felt a little magical.

And then came the perfect end to the day.

As the sun set over the Barossa Valley, we walked along the rows of dahlias, with our glasses of aperol and all sat down for dinner right underneath the installation we had created together. Sharing a meal under something made entirely from flowers and foliage was such a special experience. Moments like that remind you why people fall in love with flowers in the first place.

For me, this retreat has been about more than just flowers. It’s about exploring the possibility of something new, learning the skills, meeting people in the industry, and figuring out whether this little idea called Fairview Flowers could grow into something real.

If today is anything to go by, I’m feeling pretty inspired to give it a go.
